Hi Iwan,
Google's AI Overviews are swallowing traffic like a black hole.
But instead of whining about it, we ran a full-scale test to reverse-engineer how to get your site into AI search.
The result?
+1,400% AI search traffic. 164 AI Overview keywords.
Here's the exact step-by-step system we used (feel free to steal it).
1. Analyze how AI bots crawl your site
Most people are completely blind to how often AI visits their site, and the pages AI ignores.
Here's how to extract that data:
- Download your raw access logs from your host (SiteGround, Hostinger, etc)
- Upload to ChatGPT-4o with this prompt:
"Analyze these logs for hits from user agents: google, gptbot, perplexitybot, claudebot, google-extended. Give crawl frequency, top pages, and status codes."
Then ask ChatGPT:
- "Create a crawl frequency chart over time"
- "Break down crawl data by HTTP status"
- "List 10 least crawled URLs by AI bots"
- "List 10 most crawled URLs"
You'll get bar charts and clear data to work with.
2. Fix low-crawl pages the smart way
We found that most "use case" pages were getting zero traffic from AI bots.
Here's how we fixed it:
- In Ahrefs: Site Explorer > Internal Links > Filter by HTTP 200 + "use-case"
- Identify low-linked pages
- Add contextual internal links from authority pages
- Expand content with unique use-case info
A few weeks later, they started showing up in AI Overviews.
3. Turn top-crawled pages into AI hubs
Pages already getting AI bot traffic?
- Expand them with related subtopics (e.g. "Planters for Modern Offices" → add "Office Décor Tips" or "Indoor Plant Safety for Pets")
- Add structured data
- Internally link them to weaker pages
If AI trusts these pages, use them to funnel more visibility.
4. Find and fix AI crawl errors
Ask GPT:
"Highlight any crawl errors (4xx or 5xx) from AI bots and summarize patterns."
Then:
- Redirect broken URLs if a similar page exists
- Restore if deleted by mistake
- Build a helpful 404 page if gone for good
Use broken pages to reroute AI crawlers to content that matters.
5. Use structured data to guide AI
Google explicitly says structured data helps with AI Overviews.
The top four we used:
- Article schema
- BlogPosting schema
- HowTo schema
- FAQPage schema
Generate it with GPT. Prompt example:
"Generate JSON-LD Article schema with this info: Title: [x], Image: [x], Author: [x], Publisher: [x], Published: [x]"
6. Optimize for multimodal content
AI Overviews pull more than just text.
They grab:
- Tables
- Images
- Videos
- Lists
- Alt text
- HTML structure
Here's how to prepare your pages:
- Use HTML tables (not images)
- Add clear alt text and rename image files
- Embed videos with transcripts
- Format with subheadings and bullets
We've seen AI Overviews feature pages based on visuals and tables alone.
If your content is invisible in AI search, it's not because you're not ranking on Google.
It's because AI bots don't know what to do with your site.
