1. Crawlability and indexability
- Make sure robots.txt isn't blocking key pages
- Remove accidental noindex tags
- Submit a clean XML sitemap in Google Search Console
2. Fix index bloat
Not every page should be indexed. Audit and clean up:
- Tagged pages
- Paginated URLs
- HTTP and non-www duplicates
- Empty category or filter pages
- Parameter-based URLs (color=, size=, brand=)
Consolidate, noindex, or delete them.
3. Redirects
Sloppy redirects kill authority flow.
- Use 301s for permanent moves
- Avoid redirect chains or loops
- Never 301 a 404 to the homepage
- Redirect HTTP to HTTPS and consolidate www vs non-www

4. Speed matters
Every 1-second delay costs you 7% in conversions.
- Run PageSpeed Insights
- Use Cloudflare
- Compress images and lazy load
- Remove render-blocking JS
- Minify CSS and JS
- Keep server response under 200ms

- Use responsive design
- Run Google's mobile test
- Avoid intrusive popups
- Match content across devices
- Test mobile load speed separately
6. Schema and structured data

- Use JSON-LD (Google's preferred format)
- Add markup to products, FAQs, reviews, videos
- Test with Google's Rich Results tool
- Don't mark up content users can't see
7. Canonical tags
Too many sites let Google index duplicate versions of the same page.
- Use absolute URLs, not relative paths
- Stick to lowercase
- Reference HTTPS
- Use self-referencing canonicals
- Don't block canonical pages
8. Analyze server logs
They reveal what bots are actually doing.
- What bots crawl
- How often they visit
- Which URLs they ignore
- Where crawl budget is being wasted
- Which files are slowing things down
9. Don't overlook JavaScript SEO
Google has to render your JS before it can index the page. Make it easy for them.
- Avoid relying on JS for key content
- Stick to fast, server-side rendering
- Avoid client-side rendering if possible
- Use the URL Inspection tool
- Check meta robots tag position
10. Fix your site structure
Site structure should be flat, not deep.
- Keep pages within 3-4 clicks of homepage
- Build strong internal linking between related pages
- Create logical silos for topical authority
11. Bonus: International SEO
- Use hreflang tags for language targeting
- Use country-specific domains or subdirectories
- Avoid automatic redirects based on IP
- Create separate sitemaps per language
Search engines and AI tools rely heavily on technical signals to understand, trust, and surface your content.
